Musings on digital marketing and the web

Why database marketing is used

If you have a business, chances are that you also have a record of your clients in a spreadsheet or database.

But - how detailed is the database. Can you profile your clients according to:

  • Age group
  • How often they buy from you
  • Product/service offering they buy from you
  • Average spend
  • Behaviour (i.e. what they did on your website and where they left)
  • Whether they also use a competitor for the products/services that you don’t provide

The more you know about your clients and prospective clients, the better you can tweak your proposition to meet their needs - resulting in more interest.

There’s 3 laws that you need to be aware of:

  1. The Data Protection Act 1998
  2. The Privacy & Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 which relates to unsolicited messages sent by email, mobile, fax or text
  3. The EU Telecoms Directive which is due to become law in May 2011. This is with regards to ‘cookies’ - the user of the website must give their consent .

I hope to cover this topic in more detail in subsequent posts - security, trends, techniques, etc.

Real-time search for Google

Google is developing a system that will enable content publishers to automatically submit new content to them, as opposed to trawling for data.

This new protocol is called PubSubHubbub, or PuSH for short.

It’s explained in more detail at http://code.google.com/p/pubsubhubbub/

The advantages for small publishers are quite important - they can get their content to Google immediately, as opposed to having to wait to be crawled.

Re-blog

I’ll be using tumblr as a platform from now on……

Not as great as Wordpress for SEO, but liking the ‘posting on the move’ functionality.

Over the next few weeks will re-post old posts as well as new ones.
